When I was in the hospital I received Oprah Winfrey’s book “What I Know For Sure” as a present. The book is a collection of her columns of the same name from the O magazine. I found one column to be particularly striking and it continues to challenge me to this day.

In the article, Oprah describes calling her friend Maya Angelou on the phone upset to discuss a problem. Angelou’s response to her is to say thank-you. Here is an excerpt from the piece:

“Being grateful all the time isn’t easy. But its when you feel least thankful that you are most in need of what gratitude can give you: perspective. Gratitude can transform any situation. It alters your vibration, moving you from negative energy to positive. It’s the quickest, easiest, most powerful way to effect change in your life- this I know for sure.”

This is my challenge to you; what I hope you will gain from my stories. Whatever you have been through, are going through or are anticipating, it will happen and you will get through it. You can’t choose what you are blessed with in this life. I didn’t choose to get sick, we don’t choose to be hurt…. But you do get to choose how those moments effect your life. And you are indeed blessed.

I’m not saying bad days don’t happen or that you need to transform yourself into a positivity-spitting machine… what I am encouraging you to do is to gain some perspective by challenging yourself to consider how even what feel like the hardest moments in life, can transform you in beautiful ways.

“Say thank-you.”- it really is that simple.
